A Historical Guide to Delftware and Victorian Ointment Pots

by R J Houghton & M R Priestley

Offering 148 full colour images, this newly published pharmacy antique title explores the full history of medical ointment pots from 1750-1930.  The book is published in large format size of 240 mm by 290 mm with over 300 large, full colour images of individual pots and advertising material. This superb and lavish design, combined with the detailed historical research, makes this a truly awesome reference guide.

Following 5 years of intensive research, the book explores the history of medical antique pots from the early Georgian Delftware drug jars examples through to the late Victorian period.

For the first time in one book, over 40 Delftware named chemist jars from the 18th century have been brought together.  With the help of a huge number of worldwide collectors and Institutions, including the Wellcome Foundation, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Science Museum, the book offers stunning photographs of never previously published examples.

The book follows the history of these pots from the mid 18th century to the late 19th century.  From the more familiar ointments of Thomas Holloway, Singleton and Poor Man’s Friend, to the more exotic Bulgarian Bacillus and Electrical Herbal ointments, this attractive book includes, wherever possible, the history of the chemist, pharmacist or surgeon. It covers where the business was based and the dates when the proprietor traded.  For many of the pots, very detailed research has been included on the chemist.  This has never previously been attempted in any historical reference book on this subject.

The authors have been collecting and researching these antiques for over 25 years.  Over this time, they have built an unparalleled network of friends and fellow collectors.  The help and knowledge of this network, together with painstaking research into each of the ointment pots has enabled this book to finally emerge.

This is a must have publication, even if you are not a collector of Ointment Pots, this is a fascinating historical reference guide, no Pharmacist or Collector should be with out one.
