98 pages in length, featuring many advertisements for patent medicines and cures, including: Adsheads Derby Cream, Cross's Nursery Hair Lotion, Cross's Digestive Syrup, Cross's Botanic Medicine, Cross's Antispasmodic & Nervine Tincture, Cross's Composition Essence, Cross's Specific for Tape Worms, Masons Extract of Herbs (Pictorial Advert), Wrights Coal tar Soap, Daisy (Pictorial Advert), Dr Lane's Catarrh Cure (Pictorial Advert) and many more.

The book is made up of 5 sections.

1. Diseases; An A to Z of then common ailements from Abscesses, Bladder Inflamation, Dysentry, Pleurisy, to Shingles, Scarlet Fever and Worms. A detailed description for each ailment is then offered a cure or remedy, many of the "Cross's Proprietary Medicines".

2. Valuable Recipies: 53 valuable recipes are given to which references are made to the treament of diseases, for example:

No 1. Anticholera Powder.

Powd. Bayberry Bark    1 ounce
Powd. Gum Catechu    1  ounce
Powd. Peruvian Bark   1/2 ounce
Powd. Tormentil Root     1 ounce
Powd. Cayenne Pepper   1 drachm
Powd. Ginger Root           1/2 ounce
Powd. Cinnamon Bark   1/2 ounce

For: Cholera, Diarrhoea, Dysentry etc.
Mix well togeher and pas through a sieve. Dose_ A teaspoonful every hour if required. The cost of this quantity of powder is 1/3d

3. List of Herbs, Roots And Barks: Again a fascinating A to z list of Herbs, Roots and Barks, dispensed by Cross & Son. The opening page to this section reads:

This is merely a sample list of what we stock of Herbs that are generally known.
we could increase their number by hundreds if space permitted.

We wish our customers to bear in mind, so that if they want others not on the list, they will enquire of us.
this applies also to Herbal preparations, such as Extract, Essences, Powders, Pills, Tinctures.

Not only do you get a quite comprehensive list of herbs, barks, etc, you get the latin name, known name ie Agrimony Herb: Agrimonia Eupatoria (latin) you also get a brief description of the usage of the drug and a price list for Crude per oz or Powder per ounce. the A to Z covers from Agrimony Herb, Black Alder, Cramp Bark, Dock Root, Eryngo Root, to Pipsissiwa, Rue Herb, Sweet Flag Root and Wool Sanicle.

4. Patent Medicines: The next section of the booklet, and full of information. The opening page reads:

The list is very comprehensive, and includes prices for such well known patent medicines as: Beechams Pills, Benbow's Dog mixture, Bishop's Citrate of Caffein, Calverts Tooth Powder, Daffy's Elixir, Ellimans Embrocation, Harlene, Jewsbury & Browns Tooth Paste, Mexican Hair Renewer, No Name ointment, Owbridges Lung Tonic, Dr Rooke's Pills, Singletons Ointment, Warners Safe Cure, and many more.

5. Drug List: A comprehensive pricelist for known drugs, powders, acids etc. Given in per oz, per qtr, per lb. Examples Carbolic Acid 2d per oz, 7d per qtr and 2/- per lb. Opium 1/3 per oz, Spirits of Camphor, 3d per oz, 10d per qtr, 3/1 per ib.

A fantastic little book, full of useful information on the domestic treatment of diseases, recipes, herbs and barks, patent medicines and drugs. I hope you enjoy the read, and the wealth of information given in this E -Book, a great reference source.
