19th century Magneto Electric Machine

On offer is a superb Magneto Electric machine for nervous diseases.

This particular mdoel was sold by MAWSON & SWAN, NEWCASTLE-ON-TYNE.

There are a set of instructions pasted on the inside of the lid which reads:

Directions: Connect two metallic cords or wires with the sockets in the end of the box, and apply the handles connected with the other ends of the metallic cords or wires to any part of the person through which it is desirable to pass the current of Electricity.
then turn the Crank, regulating the strength of the current by the speed, and by the Knob at the end of the box; it being desirable to increase the strength only to the degree most agreeable to the patient.
It is less unpleasant to the patient if wet sponges are placed in the ends of the handles, and these applied to the skin, as they prevent the prickling sensation.
The sponges should NEVER be put inside the box whilst wet, as they rust the machinery.
In appying it for the Toothache, Tic-Doloreex, or Neuralgia, the operator takes one handle and places his fingers or sponge over the part affected, while the patient holds the other handle.
In applying it to the foot, place one of the handles in the water with the foot, and hold the other in the hand, or apply it to any other part of the person.
The bearings and springs must be oiled occasionally.

This is a very heavy piece of equipment (2.215kg) and will be expensive to ship overseas.

The box is in good condition, despite having a crack to the rear panel, it has good patination, some surface scratches and indentations, but overall it is quite tidy.

All the original handles and cables are still intact, and the velvet on the generator is in very good condition.

These quackery devices were used by doctors, and could be purchased from Chemists for home use. They claimed to heal all ills, and were a certain cure for nervouse diseases etc.
