SYR:RHEI: Syrupus Rhei : Syrup of Rhubarb.

Rhubarb is the rhizome of Rheum palmatum, and other species, collected in China and Thibet. The aromatic odour is characteristic; the taste is bitterish and astringent.

The chief constituents of rhubarb are anthraquinone derivatives. Among the substances which have been isolated are cinnamic and gallic acids, tannin, rheinolic acid, rhein, emodin, aloe-emodin, emodin mono-methyl-ether, chrysophanic acid, and glucosides of the last five compounds.

The chief purgative consituent of the drug is an amorphous non glucosidic resin, the drug also contains volatile oil, dextrose, laevulose, the phytosterol verosterol, starch, calcium oxalate, and the following acids: palmitic, hexoic, stearic, oleic, linolic, and linolenic.

Rhubarb increases the flow of saliva when chewed, and acts as a stomachic in atonic dyspepsia. Large doses are purgative; they increase peristalsis without producing inflamation of the intestines.

Rhubarb is employed in diarrhoea due to irritating substances in the intestines, the after astringent effect checking the diarrhoea.
Syrup of rhubarb is used as a purgative for children.

Loss of gilt decoration to the edges of the unusual enamel label.
The glass syrup stopper is Perfect, and the round itself is in amazing presentation having no defects.

This is an early free blown syrup round, the swirls in the body are quite superb, the neck is elongated, and finishes off with a wide mouth and flared lip, which is hand finished. The Sand pontil mark to the base is well defined as seen in the digital images!
