On Offer is an unusual Patent Poison Bottle used as a chemist round, (Ayrton & Saunders of Liverpool IXL Brand) Ref: KC39 In Khuns Poisons book.

TINCT:NUX VOM: Tincture of Nux Vomica

Nux vomica consists of the dried ripe seeds of strychnos Nux vomica, a small tree widely distributed over india. It produces a fruit resembling a large orange, which contains several seeds embedded in a whitish, bitter pulp. They have no odour, but a very bitter taste.

Nux vomica contains the alkaloids strychnine and brucine, they also contain fatty matter, caffeo tannic acid, and a trace of copper.

The properties of nux vomica are virtually those of the alkaloid strychnine. The powdered seeds are employed in atonic dyspepsia, in cachet form, often with bismuth or pepsin.
The tincture is much employed in mixtures for its stimulant action on the gastro-intestinal tract. In the mouth it acts as a bitter.

Damage: None to the bottle it is in pristine condition. the label is wearing thin, and has small areas of missing gold leaf to the outer edges of the label, and to the area above the letters T and I.

Height: 19 cms to the top of the stopper

The rear of the bottle has a central panel which reads NO TO BE TAKEN, to either side are panels with vertical ribs running up to the shoulder, which are slightly pinched in. The front of the bottle has POISON embossed quite close to the base, the neck has been ground specifically to take a glass stopper. This bottle has been modified for Pharmaceutical use!
