TINCT DIGITALIS: Tincture of Digitalis

Digitalis or foxglove leaves are obtained from the Foxglove Digitalis Purpurea, a Biennial herb, widely distributed throughout Europe and common in England.
The chief active constituents of digitalis leaves are the glucosides digitoxin and digitalin. Digitoxin, the most powerful constituent, is a well defined crystalline substance, and present to the extent of about 0.22% to 0.40%.
Digitalis increases the activity of all forms of muscle tissue, but more especially that of the heart and arterioles. Upon the heart it exerts a double action; the diastole is prolonged giving, in moderation, more time for complete filling, and the efficiency of systole is much increased, so that, in spite of slowing, the output of blood per minute is augmented.
Tincture of digitalis is in the commonest use.

The rear of the bottle has a central panel which reads NO TO BE TAKEN, to either side are panels with vertical ribs running up to the shoulder, which are slightly pinched in. The ffront of the bottle has POISON embossed quite close to the base, the neck has been ground specifically to take a glass stopper. This botle has been modified for Pharmaceutical use!

With the purchase of this bottle you wil also receive a full colour print of the Foxglove Digitalis Purpurea, please see additional images.
