Chloroform occurs as a heavy colourless liquid, with a characteristic odour, and sweet burning taste.
Chloroform is the best known member of the group of drugs classed as general anaesthetics. When inhaled it produces a feeling of warmth in the throat, which is followed by relaxation and, finally, unconsciousness.
The great danger of chloroform inhalation is caused by the sudden absorption of a large dose during the early stages of administration. This either excites the medulla, and the heart ceases to beat as a result of vagal inhibition or the ventricles fibrillate possibly as a result of sympathetic stimulation.
