On offer is a York Glass Co Flint Glass Lozenge Jar, with a "PATENTED PURE GOLD Label Under Glass", and polished pontiled decorative stopper.

TROCH:DIGEST:PEP: Troch Digestivus Pepsini: Digestive Pepsin Lozenges.

Pepsin is an enzyme or soluble ferment obtained from the mucous lining of the fresh and healthy stomach of the pig Sus scrofa, sheep Ovis aries or calf Bos taurus.

As it occurs in commerce, pepsin is a light yellowish-brown or white amorphous powder, or it forms pale yellow translucent scales or grains.

The chief constituent of pepsin is a soluble enzyme, which renders insoluble proteins soluble, converting them into proteoses and peptones.

The digestive or solvent action of pepsin on protein substances only occurs in acid solution, 0.4% of real hydrochloric acid being about the optimum strength. It dissolves natural insoluble protein, albumin, and fibrin, converting them first into soluble acid albumose, and subsequently into peptone, the peptonising power being the quality on which the valuation of the pepsin depends; mere solution of the coagulated egg albumen does not necessarily imply peptonising power.
Pepsin is used in therapeutics to increase the digestive power of the gastric juice when there is a deficiency of ferment.

York Glass Co made some of the most highly decorative and functional chemist bottles and jars, many of which had decorative stoppers and labels.

These bottles and jars are very rare indeed!

There were serious manufacturing defects with these labels, due to the delicate nature of the gold panel.

This is a superb item, it is in excellent condition, and is a scarce piece of pharmaceutical history!

21 cms to the top of the flat glass stopper.

DEFECTS:

Slight crinkling to the gold panel. There are no other defects present.

This is a very collectable item, and certainly an investment piece. Trust me these patented "Pure Gold Label Under Glass" Pharmacy Rounds are extremely difficult to obtain.
