DIONIN: Ethylmorphine Hydrochloride.
Dionin occurs as a white, odourless, minutely crystalline powder, having a bitter taste.
Ethylmorphine hydrochloride is intermediate in its properties between morphine and codeine; it does not depress the respiratory centre to the same extent as morphine, but depresses the appreciation of peripheral sensation similarly to codeine.
It is therefore employed to allay cough in bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and whooping cough. It is narcotic and sedative, and is sometimes employed in ulcer and cancer of the stomach and bowel when morphine causes nausea.
