Flint Glass Spirit Bottle: SPT;Camphor
On offer is a superb flint glass spirit bottle with shield shaped label.
SPT:Camphor:Spiritus Camphorae:
Spirit of Camphor:
Camphor is a ketonic derivative of camphane, obtained from the camphor tree, Cinnamomum Camphora, a tree growing abundantly in Fomosa, Japan, and the Chinese continent.
Camphor occurs as a colourless, transparent, crystalline solid. It has a powerful penetrating odour, and pungent, somewhat bitter taste, followed by a slight sensation of cold. When applied externally, camphor dilates the vessels of the skin, and is used as a rubefacient and mild counter irritant. Internally camphor has much the same action as the volatile oils, and is prescribed as a carminative in flatulence and as a antiseptic for the alimentary canal.
It mildly excite the circulation, dilating the superficial vessels and slightly increasing the cardiac output. It also directly excites the cerebrum. I is a popular remedy, either taken by the mouth or used as a snuff, for the relief of colds. For internal use, camphor is administered in the form of a pill, massed with a little soap and glycerin of tragacanth, or with extract of henbane.
The bottle is in exellent condition, having no damge, the label is in good order too, suffering no cracks or chips. The base is embossed E.S.L.W and an RD number of 638890 which dates the bottle to around 1914.
Damage:
None to the bottle, there are some vertical mould marks to the rear of the bottle, which are quite common on this style of round.
Label:
slight crinkling to the left hand gold border, there are no other defects present.
A nice offering!
