19th Century Square Bodied Chemist Oleum Flask Ol: Caryoph: Ang:
On Offer is a superb 19th century Oleum bottle with patented phototype glass label.
OL: CARYOPH: ANG:
Oil Of Cloves
Oil of cloves is obtained by distillation from the unexpanded flower heads of Eugenia caryophyllata, cultivated in sumatra, Penang, the Seychelles, and Zanzibar. Oil of cloves occurs as an almost colourless or pale yellow liquid when recently distilled, gradually becoming reddish-brown; strongly refractive; odour, strongly aromatic; taste, persistently burning.
Oil of cloves consists chiefly of eugenol, which is present to the extent of 85 to 92%, and is the most valuable and characteristic constituent of the oil.
Oil of cloves, like other volatile oils, is antiseptic and antiputrescent; it is often employed as a preservative of organic substances when its odour is unobjectionable. Externally it is rubefacient, counter-irritant, and slightly anaesthetic; mixed with 2 parts of olive oil it may be applied to neuralgic areas;and as Linimentum Succini Compositum, it is employed as an embrocation in bronchitis, whooping cough, and rheumatism.
Internally, oil of cloves is antispasmodic and carminative.
These are very rare bottles, square bodied with a patented phototype glass label. I cannot stress enough how uncommon these particular bottles are. High quality flint glass! To the base is embossed the York Glass Co trade mark and the RD number of 334659 which dates the bottle to
1899.
Damage:
Sadly there is a hairline crack to the mouth of the bottle, there are no other defects present to the bottle, the glass funnel, or the glass domed lid. The patented phototype glass label is in excellent order!
Height:
19 cms to the top of the polished pontilled glass lid
Still a very nice rare bottle despite the damage, and priced accordingly.
