19th Century Square Bodied Chemist Flask: Sp:Vini Rect:

On offer is a superb large 19th Century York Glass Co Spirit Bottle.

SP: VINI: RECT:

Spiritus Vinum Rectificatus: Ethy Alcohol

Spiritus Rectificatus Syn: Ethyl Alcohol, is obtained by the distillation of fermented saccharine liquids and contains 90% by volume of ethyl hydroxide.
Alcohol occurs as a transparent, colourless, mobile, volatile liquid, with a slight agreeable odour, and strong burning taste.

miscible in all proportions with water, ether ,or chloroform. diluted alcohol of different strengths may be prepared by mixing alcohol and distilled water in various proportions.

Diluted alcohol is used externally as an evaporating lotion in various forms of skin inflamation; it is also employed to diminish sweating. Alcohol hardens the skin by dehydration, and is therefore used to harden the nipples before lactation, and to prevent bedsores.
Internally  it may be useful as a mild gastric stimulant and carminative.

These are very rare bottles, square bodied with a patented glass label.  I cannot stress enough how uncommon these particular bottles are. High quality flint glass, with an ornate cut glass stopper. To the base is embossed the York Glass Co trade mark and the RD number of  334659 which dates the bottle to 1899.

Damage:
None to the bottle or to the label, they are in pristine condition. The stopper has a couple of small chips to the internal tip.

Height: 25cms to the top of the stopper.

Price: £65.00
