On offer is a superb medium sized 19th Century York Glass Co Tincture Bottle, with a patent phototype label. Inf: Calumb:conc:

Inf:Calumb:Conc:Infusum Calumbae Concentratum: Concentrated Infusion of Calumba.

Calumba root, consists of the dried transverse slices of the root of Jateorhiza Columba, a climbing plant indigenous to East Africaand growing freely in the forests near the Zambesi.

Calumba root occurs in commerce in flattish discs varying from 2.5 to 5cms in diameter. The drug has a slight odour, and bitter taste.

The chief constituents of calumba root are columbamine, palmatine, and jateorhizine, three yellow crystalline alkaloids, closely allied to berberine; the drug also contains a colourless, crystalline principle, columbin, all these constituents contribute to the bitter taste of the drug.

Calumba is a pure bitter, and is used in atonic dyspepsia and debility of the digestive organs.

These are very rare bottles, square bodied with a patented glass label. I cannot stress enough how uncommon these particular bottles are. High quality flint glass, with an ornate cut glass stopper. To the base is embossed the York Glass Co trade mark and the RD number of 334659 which dates the bottle to 1899.

Damage: Stress Fracture to the neck, mould marks to the front and rear of the bottle. The Label is in pristine condition. The stopper has a small chip to the internal tip.

Height: 22 cms to the top of the stopper.
