19th Century Flint Glass Spirit Bottle: SPT Aetheris

On offer is a superb flint glass spirit bottle with shield shaped label.

SPT:AETHERIS: Spititus Aetheris: Spirit of Ether.

ether, ethylic ether, or diethyl ether, is prepared by the action of sulphuric acid on ethyl alcohol or industrial methylated spirit, and subsequent rectification.

It is a colourles, mobile, volatile, and very inflammable liquid, with a characteristic odour. Ether is employed in medicine for three distinct purposes:

1: As a local anaesthetic, by spraying.
2: Internally, for its action on the stomach and circulation.
3: For inhalation as a general anaesthetic.

Ether is also employed in pharmacy as a menstrum for exhausting such drugs as male fern and capsicum, being a good solvent of their active principles. As a local anaesthetic the ether spray is satisfactory for small and superficial operations, and to ease pain. As a general anaesthetic, ether is only about one-fourth as toxic to the central nervous system as chloroform, and judging by the death rate under anaesthetics, it is about four times as safe as the latter.

Spiritus Aetheris is used as a rapid stimulant and antispasmodic. As a cardiac stimulant it acts immediately by exciting the nerve endings in the mouth and stomach.

The bottle is in good condition, but does have some internal staining, it was in a far worse condition and I have managed to clean it up quite considerably.

Damage: None! to the bottle its self, Internal staining present. Label: Some crinkling to the gold borders, loss of some wax sealant, and some internal markings of the white background.
